Tuna, The Clash & Pink Floyd Anyone? Our genius drummer explains...

February 4, 2017

'The second in our series of occasional insights into the minds of this extraordinary and talented band, drummer Tony Holt waxes lyrical. Fishy? Certainly - but read on....'  JM : ) x

I've always had great appreciation for a well tuned drum kit. Back in 2010 I came up with a design for a drum tuning gauge to help drummers achieve a pure, clean and resonant tone on their drums. I built a few and sent them off to a bunch of drum magazines for their opinion. They loved them! In the UK, Rhythm Magazine and Drummer Magazine, and Modern Drummer (US) all ran positive product reviews. Suddenly, I was inundated with orders!

The Drumtuna range of tympanic drum tuning gauges was launched in earnest at the London Drum Show at Olympia later that year. I pitched up with my makeshift stall alongside industry giants like Yamaha and Sabian, but over those two days I sold all fifty units I'd taken with me and started filling an order book.

I was sooo busy I didn't even recognise the charming older chap who happily chatted to me at my stall for 20 minutes about all things drums. It was only Nick Mason from Pink Floyd!

Over the next few years I built hundreds of tuners on my kitchen table and they were shipped all over the world. I continued to exhibit and met loads of my drumming heroes, many of whom used and even became endorsers of Drumtuna products.

It sounds ridiculous, but one of my biggest thrills was when legendary Clash drummer Nicky 'Topper' Headon followed me on Twitter!

Of course, eventually demand began to wane as technology moved on, so I wound things up. But I had great fun and who knows, maybe one day I'll relaunch Drumtuna with another cool drum related product.

'Track after track of catchy tunes...If you are a fan of Bowie or Talking Heads or Peter Gabriel, 10cc or George Martin's work with the Beatles, then this album will be a perfect addition to your collection.'

Krimson Collective Magazine

'Soaring choruses...a festival treat...off kilter, edgy with mainstream feel of Dodgy, Squeeze, Beck & Eels. We owe Hoo-Hah Conspiracy a big thank you for their trouble’
